Abstract

This research aims to analyze the impact of the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) policy on enhancing the interdependence between Indonesia and China. The study employs a qualitative approach, combining descriptive analysis methods with library research. It utilizes interdependence theory to examine the effects of the BRI policy on the dynamics of Indonesia's relationship with China in the economic sector and to alter Indonesia's foreign policy direction towards China. The findings indicate that the trajectory of China's foreign policy under Xi Jinping's leadership has shifted towards a more proactive and aggressive stance with the establishment of the BRI policy in 2013. During Joko Widodo's administration, the intensity of cooperation between Indonesia and China significantly increased, with Indonesia's total exports to China experiencing a growth of 65% from 2014 to 2020. China replaced Japan as Indonesia's largest trading partner in 2016, a change attributed to Joko Widodo's policies aligning with the BRI, particularly in infrastructure development. Under Prabowo's administration, Indonesia's foreign policy towards China prioritizes balancing its relations with other major powers such as the United States, Japan, and China, in accordance with Indonesia's free and active political doctrine. The BRI policy presents an opportunity for Indonesia's economic development; however, the growing interdependence between Indonesia and China also brings various impacts, such as a continuous increase in debt to China, which enhances its influence over Indonesia and poses potential risks to the country.
